Chapter 14: “Home is Where the Love Is” 

Yosef, originally from Eritrea, who arrived aged sixteen, in 2011.

Yosef fled his home, aged eleven, and was imprisoned in Libya and Italy before arriving in the UK in the back of a lorry. He first lived with an English foster carer and then an Eritrean foster carer who treated him as a son. He joined Phosphoros theatre company of young asylum seekers who have performed Dear Home Office across the UK. The new Illegal Migration Act 2022 would not grant asylum to people, like Yosef, who arrive by irregular routes. This act, to which the UK is a signatory, contravenes the 1951 Refugee Convention.
