Chapter 15: Seeking Sanctuary on a Scottish Island

Syrian children who arrived from Lebanon, aged six – sixteen, on the Isle of Bute, Scotland in 2015.

Twenty-six Syrian families arrived on the Isle of Bute in December 2018 as part of the Syrian refugee resettlement scheme introduced by Prime Minister, David Cameron. The teachers of Rothesay Joint Campus were among those who met them at Glasgow airport and gave the children presents. The film Seeking Sanctuary on a Scottish Island explores both children’s and teachers’ experiences, challenging assumptions that cities with a history of migration are more welcoming than rural areas.
