Chapter 4: Following Mum to the ‘Motherland’

Richard Lue and Roberta who arrived, aged seven and eight respectively, from Jamaica in 1964.

Roberta, whose mother had left when she was five, always knew that her mother would send for her. In contrast Richard, whose mother left when he was a baby, did not know he would be joining his mother until the night before he left and did not recognise her at the airport. Both encountered racism in London, Roberta in school and Richard, by the police. Richard’s conviction, along with others of the Windrush generation, threatened his future in the UK - losing his job and benefits.
